Hartshead: what to know before moving day
St Peter's Church keeps Norman work in its tower, south doorway and chancel arch, but was largely rebuilt in 1880 to 1881; Patrick Brontë served there from 1811 to 1815. In the churchyard stands The Old School of about 1828, once a schoolroom or a hearse house. The Walton Cross, thought to date from the 11th century, stands north of Walton Cross Farmhouse, and Kirklees Hall lies between Hartshead and Clifton.
Hartshead Lane has a group of listed stone houses, numbers 119, 120 and 121, with mullioned windows, one with a dated Tudor-arched lintel over a blocked door. Hartshead Junior and Infant School and The Hartshead pub are in the village, and Hollin Wood, Dockentail Wood and Little Thorpe Wood surround it, crossed by public footpaths. If your cottage door opens straight onto the lane, say so when you book.
How the van gets to Hartshead
The B6119 is the road through Hartshead, called Peep Green Road and Fall Lane in the village and Windy Bank Lane further out; School Lane and Hartshead Lane branch off it. The A62 Leeds Road is a little over a kilometre away, and the M62, with Hartshead Moor services between junctions 25 and 26, is not far off.
