Liversedge: what to know before moving day

Liversedge made its living from wool and is counted as part of the Heavy Woollen District. Its best known episode is the Luddite attack on Rawfolds Mill in 1812. Sparrow Park, outside Liversedge Town Hall at the top of Knowler Hill, was laid out in 2012 for the 200th anniversary, and the Shears Inn, where the rising started, is still open a short way up the road. Spen Beck runs through the town.

Healds Hall, built in 1764 and listed at Grade II, is now a hotel; one of its owners, Hammond Roberson, became Parson Helstone in Charlotte Brontë's novel Shirley. Around Millbridge the side streets carry plain names such as Sampson Street, Mark Street and Edward Street, while the roads out climb towards Roberttown Lane and Listing Lane. If your street is one of the older ones, measure the front door and the turn of the stairs before booking a large wardrobe.

The town is run by Kirklees Council. For council elections the Leeds Road and Huddersfield Road line divides it: Roberttown, Hightown and Littletown are in Liversedge and Gomersal ward, and Norristhorpe and Flush are in Heckmondwike ward. The postcode is WF15, a Wakefield one, although some local phone numbers still begin 01274, the Bradford code.

How the van gets to Liversedge

From Bradford the M606 runs south to Chain Bar, junction 26 of the M62. From that roundabout the A638 goes through Cleckheaton, crosses the River Spen at Rawfolds and runs as a dual carriageway through Littletown before reaching Millbridge as Bradford Road. The A62 (Leeds Road and Huddersfield Road) crosses it there, and Halifax Road, the A649, and Knowler Hill lead up to the older streets.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Are Millbridge, Roberttown and Littletown separate from Liversedge?

No, they are parts of it. Millbridge is the geographical centre, Littletown and Hightown lie towards Cleckheaton, and Roberttown and Norristhorpe sit on opposite sides of the A62. Several have a page of their own here, so give the street and postcode when you book.

What happened to Liversedge Central station on the Spen Valley line?

Liversedge Central was on the Spen Valley line, which closed to passengers in 1965. Since 1998 its trackbed has been the Spen Valley Greenway, a path for walkers, riders and cyclists, so every move here is a road job.
