Moving in Birstall: what to know first

The older core is where the planning goes. The terraced streets around the Victorian market place and Kirkgate, down to St Peter's Church, have on-street parking only and no residents' bays to fall back on, so the van takes the nearest safe space and the trolley covers the rest. On Thursdays the market takes the central space beside the Joseph Priestley statue, which pushes any loading there further out.

Away from the centre it gets easier. The post-war estates at Nova and Fieldhead, Howden Clough on the Morley side and the newer semis towards Birkenshaw mostly have a drive or a kerb close to the door, so the house sets the pace rather than the street. Oakwell, near Oakwell Hall Country Park, is family housing with room to work.

Then there are the retail parks. Birstall Shopping Park and Junction 27 Retail Park sit together beside the motorway, and the roads into them queue at weekends, so a Saturday job here needs extra time. The IKEA store on Holden Ing Way, which trades as IKEA Leeds although it stands in Birstall, sells flat-pack, sofas and appliances that will never fit in a car, and a van collection from there is a short run to any WF17 street.

Parking and access in Birstall

Small bays around the market place and Kirkgate fill early and are taken by the Thursday market; terraced streets are on-street only with no residents' bays. The retail parks at junction 27 have large surface car parks, useful for loading a collection but not for a house move.
