Oakwell: what to know before moving day
Oakwell Hall was built for John Batte, probably in 1583, in gritstone with a central hall between two cross-wings. It has been in council hands since 1928, and Charlotte Brontë used it as 'Fieldhead' in Shirley; it has also been filmed for ITV's Victoria and the BBC's Gunpowder. The Oak Tree cafe and a gift shop with tourist information sit beside it.
Around the hall the country park takes in Nova Wood, Asker Wood, Asker Pond, Dog Pond and Oakwell Beck, and the old Leeds New Line runs along one side, with an information board by the trackbed. Nutter Lane and Nova Lane are the made roads; Warrens Lane is a bridleway and Rideway is a track. That mix matters for a van: a house on a track or bridleway may mean stopping where the tarmac ends, so describe the approach, or send a map pin, before the day.
How the van gets to Oakwell
Coming from Bradford, the van follows the M62 to junction 27 and then Birstall's local roads to the park. Nova Lane is the approach from the Nova side, Nutter Lane serves the hall end, and Field Head Lane, the B6125, runs past the Fieldhead side of the park.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
