Thursday market, Kirkgate's climb and the estates below
Thursday is market day and the stalls take the central kerb space beside the Joseph Priestley statue, so loading near the market place that day means working from further out. Kirkgate and the lanes around St Peter's Church are the real pinch: they climb on the high ground above the town, they are parked tight on both sides, and a 3.4-metre load has to be manoeuvred rather than simply reversed up. We'd rather start early there than fight it at eleven.
Below and around that sit the big post-war estates at Nova, Fieldhead and Howden Clough, and the newer commuter housing filling in towards Birkenshaw. Those are wider streets with somewhere to put the van, so the house itself sets the pace. The thing to watch is the motorway end: J27 traffic for the retail parks backs up along Gelderd Road and Holden Ing Way at weekends, and Howden Clough drops towards Morley more steeply than a map suggests.
What Birstall house removals usually involves
- Bays around the market place and Kirkgate are small, free or short-stay and fill early, and on Thursdays the market has them
- Terraced streets are on-street only with no residents' bays to fall back on, so the van takes the nearest space and the rest is carried
- Mill terraces and cottages in the old core have narrow frontages and a single front door, so a three-seater usually comes out with its legs off
- Estate houses at Nova, Fieldhead and Howden Clough load off the street or a drive and typically run to one or two loads
- The J27 retail park car parks have room to wait between drops on a two-load day, which is useful staging, though never a place to load a house from
Where in Birstall we work
- Kirkgate and St Peter'sthe steep, tightly parked high ground, and the hardest loading in Birstall
- The market placesetted, triangular and taken by the Thursday market while the stalls are up
- Nova and Fieldheadlarge post-war estates with proper room to work outside the house
- Howden Cloughdrops into the valley towards Morley, so eastern approaches are steeper than they look
- Birkenshawmodern commuter semis and detached infill, generally drive-up loading
- Oakwellfamily housing beside Oakwell Hall Country Park, a common destination for people moving out of Leeds
If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Birstall and the surrounding WF17 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.
Common Birstall runs
- Bradford → Birstallseven miles out on the A650 through Tong Street and Drighlington, the shortest run on our patch
- Leeds → Birstallabout six miles, the move people make for a village centre with M62 J27 on the doorstep
- Birstall → Batley or Dewsburyshort Heavy Woollen hops, usually a single load
What it costs
Birstall jobs are priced on the time and the load, and the biggest single variable is whether you're in the old core above the market or on an estate with room outside. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Birstall from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: house removals in Birstall
Can you move me on a Thursday?
Yes, though for an address near the market place it shapes the timing. The stalls take the central kerb space by the Priestley statue for the day, so we either start early before they set up or work from a position further out and carry. Say where you are when you book.
Will the van get up Kirkgate?
It will, but slowly and with a plan. Kirkgate and the lanes by St Peter's climb steeply and are parked tight both sides, which leaves very little room to swing a long wheelbase van. We pick a position and load from it rather than trying to get the van right to the door and blocking the street.
We're moving from Leeds into Birstall. Do you cover both ends?
Yes, and it is a short job. Leeds is roughly six miles away and Bradford about seven, so both ends are well inside our area with no travel surcharge either way. Most Leeds-to-Birstall moves we do are done inside a day, often in a single load.
