IKEA Leeds at Birstall: How to Get Big Furniture Home

IKEA Leeds is actually in Birstall, on Holden Ing Way just off junction 27 of the M62, and you have four ways to get a big order home from it: IKEA's own delivery (£5 to £10 for lighter orders, £40 once any single box weighs over 25kg, as of September 2026), free click and collect in your own car, an hourly Hertz 24/7 van hired at the store, or a man and van who meets you there and carries everything into the right room. Which one wins depends mostly on the weight of your heaviest box and whether it will physically fit in your car.

IKEA Leeds at Birstall: address, hours and services

There's only one IKEA in West Yorkshire, and although it's called IKEA Leeds, it sits in Birstall Shopping Park in Kirklees, about six miles south-west of Leeds city centre and 20 to 30 minutes from Bradford. According to IKEA's store page, the address is IKEA Leeds, Holden Ing Way, Birstall, Batley, WF17 9AE. The store lists delivery, click and collect, van hire, assembly and financial services.

Hours as listed on the IKEA Leeds page on 23 September 2026. Bank holiday hours are listed separately and change around Christmas, so check before a special trip. From Bradford, the quickest way is the M606 to the M62 and one junction east to J27, or the A650 through Tong Street and Drighlington. At weekends the queues on Gelderd Road and Holden Ing Way are the slowest part of the journey, which is covered in more detail on our Birstall area page.

Four ways to get your IKEA order home, compared

Here's how the options line up for a typical big purchase. IKEA figures come from its own service pages, checked in September 2026.

How IKEA delivery pricing works

IKEA delivery costs depend on the total weight of the order, the weight of the heaviest single box, and whether anything is fragile. Distance doesn't come into it. IKEA's delivery page splits orders into two methods.

Lighter orders: parcel delivery to your doorstep

Orders under 75kg in total, with every box under 25kg, go by DPD to your doorstep. Orders of 75 to 100kg pay a £10 surcharge. The minimum order value for delivery is £15.

Heavier or fragile orders: truck delivery

Once an order is over 100kg, has any box over 25kg, or contains fragile items, it goes on IKEA's heavier delivery service. IKEA says these are delivered "to either your doorstep or a selected room of your choice", and the driver phones an hour before arriving.

Weekend delivery adds £5 on heavier orders, and orders over 1,000kg carry a £60 surcharge. The 4-hour slot is only offered in selected postcodes. Your exact price and lead time show at checkout once you enter your postcode.

What that means for real products

The heaviest box decides more than the price tag. We took the package weights from IKEA's own product pages (under "Package details") for some of the most common big buys:

Package details checked on ikea.com/gb on 23 September 2026. The last column is our reading of IKEA's price tables for that item ordered on its own; fragile items or a bigger basket can change it. Two things stand out. First, a single BILLY bookcase costs four times as much to deliver as a whole double bed. Second, the cheap £10 band means a parcel courier leaves 50 to 60kg of boxes on your doorstep, and carrying them upstairs is your job.

In-store delivery and assembly

If you buy in the store, the delivery page (checked September 2026) lists a fixed-price "delivery service from IKEA store" at £29, for addresses in the store's delivery area, and you have to arrange it at the store. The £39 same-day and £49 selected-time options via Taskrabbit are only listed for Birmingham, Croydon, Greenwich, Lakeside, Warrington and Wembley, not Leeds. For building the furniture, IKEA's assembly service is run by Taskrabbit and, as of September 2026, starts at £33, priced by the products you want built.

Click and collect at IKEA Leeds: free, but you do the loading

Click and collect at the Birstall store costs nothing, whatever the size of the order. You pick a collection slot at checkout, wait for the email saying it's ready, then follow the signs in store and scan the QR code to check in. IKEA's click and collect page is clear about the last step: "Collect your order, load it into your vehicle and drive home." Products aren't bagged or wrapped, so bring blankets for anything that could scratch.

If you're shopping in person instead, the product page tells you the aisle and shelf for flat-pack items once you select the Leeds store. Write both numbers down before you go, because big boxes are picked from the self-serve furniture area yourself, and a 56kg PAX box on a low shelf is a two-person lift.

Will your IKEA order fit in a car?

Compare the longest box with your car's load length before you buy. IKEA itself tells click and collect customers to check package sizes and weights so the order fits in the vehicle. As a rough guide:

• Usually fine in a car: boxes up to about 1.5m, such as the 147cm KALLAX (boxes of 144cm and 151cm), smaller chests of drawers, lamps, textiles and kitchenware. Fold the rear seats and check the front passenger seat will go far enough forward.
• Borderline: 1.6 to 2m boxes like the HEMNES 8-drawer chest (164cm), the MALM bed side rails (194cm) or BRIMNES wardrobe panels (195cm). Some estates take them with the seats folded, but measure from the closed tailgate to the back of the front seats (or the dashboard, with the passenger seat folded) first.
• Not a car job: a 2.06m BILLY, a 2.46m PAX frame, or a KIVIK sofa frame box that's 184cm long and 90cm wide. These don't fit inside most cars with the tailgate shut.

Don't be tempted to tie a 2.4m wardrobe box to a roof rack or drive with the boot open. Rule 98 of the Highway Code says you "MUST secure your load and it MUST NOT stick out dangerously", and flat cardboard boxes catch the wind badly on the M62.

IKEA van hire from Birstall: what it costs and the catch

IKEA's in-store van hire is run by Hertz 24/7 and is available at the Leeds store. IKEA's van hire page lists these rates (September 2026):

• £15 per hour, or £25 for two hours for IKEA Family members
• £50 for a half day
• £65 a day Monday to Thursday, £80 Friday to Sunday
• A £10 annual membership, with registration and booking through the Hertz 24/7 app (you need a smartphone)

The catch is the round trip. The van has to go back to Birstall, so a customer in Bradford drives home (20 to 30 minutes), unloads, drives back and then gets home again without it. Two hours is tight with a weekend J27 queue and a flight of stairs. You also do all the lifting, and IKEA's page doesn't set out mileage, fuel or insurance excess, so read the Hertz 24/7 terms before you book.

Using a man and van from IKEA Leeds

A man and van works best when the boxes are heavy, the stairs are awkward, or you want everything home the same day you buy it. Birstall is about seven miles from our Bradford base and inside our core area, so there's no travel surcharge. We're independent of IKEA: you buy the goods, and we collect them against your order or collection details. The usual ways it runs:

1. You shop, we meet you. Tell us roughly when you'll be at the tills. You pay and bring your trolleys out, and we load the van in the car park with blankets and straps, then drive to your home.
2. Click and collect, then deliver. Book a collection slot and send us the confirmation. If you'd rather not go yourself, ask IKEA first whether someone else can collect on your behalf.
3. IKEA plus another stop. Pick up a mattress or rug from Birstall Shopping Park or the Junction 27 retail park next door, or a Facebook Marketplace buy on the way home, in the same trip.

At your home, loading and unloading are always included, so the boxes go into whichever rooms you want on any floor, and if you're buying a replacement for something you already own, we can move the old one to another room, the garage or the kerb ready for your council's bulky waste collection. We don't take old furniture away ourselves, so if you want it gone, ask IKEA about its removal and recycling options or book the council collection. For straightforward flat-pack we can usually give you a hand putting it together; mention it when you book so the time is allowed for. Anything that needs plumbing or electrical work is a job for the right trade.

Which option should you choose?

Match the option to your heaviest box and your deadline:

• Small items, or boxes under about 1.5m: click and collect in your own car. It's free.
• Everything under 25kg per box, no hurry, ground floor or a strong back: IKEA standard delivery at £10 is hard to beat, as long as you can wait up to 30 days and carry the boxes in from the doorstep.
• Any box over 25kg, and you can wait: IKEA's £40 standard delivery, with room-of-choice drop-off.
• You want it soon, it won't fit your car, or it's going up two flights: a man and van from the store. Same day is possible when the diary allows, and you don't lift the 50kg boxes yourself.
• You have a strong helper and a ground-floor home: Hertz van hire, if you're happy driving a van and fitting the return trip into your hire time.

Tips for a smoother IKEA trip

• Measure the route, not just the room. IKEA asks delivery customers to make sure the order fits "all doorways, halls, stairs or lifts". The KIVIK sofa's main box is 184cm long and 90cm wide, which needs a clear turn at the top of a narrow staircase, and a sofa that arrives fully built is harder still; our guide to whether a new sofa will fit through your door shows how to measure.
• Check stock and locations online before you go. Select the Leeds store on each product page to see availability and the aisle and shelf numbers for flat-pack items.
• Go on a weekday if you can. The store opens at 10am Monday to Friday, and the J27 queues are much lighter than on a Saturday.
• Count the boxes against the receipt before you leave. Many items come in several packages (a MALM double bed with slatted base is four), and a missing box usually means a second trip back to Birstall.
• Keep boxes flat until you build. Long flat-pack boxes are easy to damage at the corners and edges if they're propped up against a wall. Lay them flat on a clean floor in the room where the furniture will live.
