Moving in Thornhills: what to know first
The homes at Thornhills are a short run of detached and semi-detached houses and a small terrace on Thornhills Lane, and most of them share the HD6 4JQ postcode, so give the house name or number as well. Past the houses the lane narrows to about 3 metres, with no pavement and no street lights, and it is also a public footpath, so expect walkers. The van loads in the lane at your gate; a car left on the verge outside can block it, so ask neighbours to keep that stretch clear on the morning.
Everything comes in by Thornhills Beck Lane, about 3.5 metres wide with no pavement, which also serves the business units at Woodvale Workshops and Albion Mill, so delivery vans use it on weekdays. Its other end is Jay House Lane, a country lane under the national speed limit towards the A643. If the move is in winter, an early start keeps the loading in daylight, because nothing on the lane is lit.
Thornhills: the local picture
In 2023 Calderdale Council adopted a plan for 3,000 new homes on land at Thornhills and Woodhouse, known as the Thornhills Garden Community. If you are buying on one of the new streets as they are built, the road may be too new for some sat navs, so a plot number or the site entrance you use saves time on the day.
For now the hamlet is a lane of houses among fields on the Clifton side of Brighouse. Thornhills Beck runs to the west, with a ford named Thornhill Beck Ford, and Oak Hill Bank woodland and the viaduct of the disused Brighouse Branch railway lie to the south. Wellholme Park, with its crown green bowling greens and a car park, is the nearest open space on the town side.
How the van gets to Thornhills
From the Brighouse end the van leaves Bradford Road (the A641) for Thornhills Beck Lane and turns into Thornhills Lane. From Bradford it comes down the M606 to the A58 Whitehall Road, then the B6120 and the A643 Walton Lane to Jay House Lane, roughly 20 to 30 minutes. On a lane this narrow a long van may need to wait for an oncoming car, so allow a few minutes for the last stretch.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Thornhills
Why does the sat nav keep offering Thornhill?
Because Thornhill, without the s, is a separate place on the south side of Dewsbury in Kirklees. Thornhills is in Calderdale on the Brighouse side, with HD6 postcodes such as HD6 4JQ, so give the full postcode and the lane name when you book.
Will a long van fit past the houses on Thornhills Lane?
Yes, but only just in places: beyond the houses it is about 3 metres wide with no pavement. The van comes in from Thornhills Beck Lane and stops at your gate, so one parked car on the lane is the thing that causes trouble.
Is the Thornhills Garden Community the same place as the hamlet?
It takes its name from the hamlet, but the plan covers a much larger area of land at Thornhills and Woodhouse, 3,000 homes in all. On a new-build street, send the plot number and the site entrance along with the postcode.
