North Featherstone sits around All Saints' Church at the junction of the B6134 and the B6421, joined to the town centre by Featherstone Lane. The main town grew after the railway arrived in 1848 and Featherstone Main Colliery opened in 1866, and its terraced streets are close to the centre: George Street, Granville Street, Fearnley Street, Whiteley Street and Hartley Terrace are all within a few hundred metres of Station Lane. The old National Coal Board estate known as the Pit Houses has been demolished for newer building.

St Thomas's Church, from the 1870s, has no bell tower; its bell hangs on the south wall. Featherstone Rovers play at Post Office Road. On a terraced street near the centre, an early start gives the best chance of space outside the door.

When did Featherstone get its trains back?

On 12 May 1992, when the Pontefract Line station reopened on the site of the one closed in 1967. It has hourly trains on weekdays and Saturdays to Leeds via Wakefield and to Knottingley via Pontefract Monkhill, and a two-hourly Sunday service.
