Hemsworth: what to know before moving day

Cross Hill is where the Barnsley to Pontefract road meets the Wakefield to Doncaster road, and St Helen's Church there was largely rebuilt in 1865 to 1867 by John Loughborough Pearson. Market Street, part of the B6273, has the library, the post office and the bus station, with buses to Barnsley, Pontefract, Wakefield and South Elmsall. Among the town's eleven listed buildings are 28 and 30 Barnsley Road, a three-storey house of 1773, and Hemsworth High Hall, later taken into a school.

Hemsworth Water Park and Playworld, with its two lakes, and Vale Head Park lie between the town and Kinsley. Outwood Academy Hemsworth on Wakefield Road began in 1921 as Hemsworth Grammar School, and the primary schools include St Helen's, West End Academy, Grove Lea and Sacred Heart. Housing close to the centre includes Grange Way, Springstone Avenue, Ridgestone Avenue and Valestone Avenue.

How the van gets to Hemsworth

From Bradford the van heads for Wakefield, then south-east on the A638 Doncaster Road as far as Foulby, where the B6273 turns off as Garmill Lane and runs through Fitzwilliam and Kinsley into Hemsworth as Wakefield Road. The A628 Barnsley to Pontefract road bypasses the town to the south and east.

Hemsworth lost its own station in 1967, so where do trains go from now?

From Fitzwilliam, just north of the town, which reopened in 1982. Monday to Saturday it has two trains an hour towards Wakefield Westgate and Leeds and an hourly service to Doncaster and Sheffield. Hemsworth's own station closed to passengers and goods in November 1967.
