Ryhill: what to know before moving day

Chapel Street is the centre, with the post office, St Paul's Methodist Church and Ryhill Junior, Infant and Nursery School, and Station Road has the village social club. Ryhill Main Colliery worked on West Fields from 1874 to 1922, sending coal by tramway to the Barnsley Canal at Old Royston. The Dearne Valley Railway and the Old Oaks to Nostell line still show on the map as disused trackbeds.

New housing developments have drawn commuters to the village, and OpenStreetMap shows estates such as Hammerton Farm Avenue, Larchfield Way, Mayfield Rise and the Lakeside Estate alongside Sunny Bank, Lafflands Lane and Quarry Mount. Only two buildings in the parish are listed: a probably medieval well head and Rycliff Farmhouse. Wintersett Reservoir is less than a kilometre away.

How the van gets to Ryhill

The B6428 runs along the edge of the village as Hall Field Lane and Cow Lane, continuing through Havercroft and Newstead to Fitzwilliam. Nostell Lane leads towards Nostell, and Ferry Top Lane runs out to Wintersett.

They are two civil parishes, but the built-up area is shared, and the boundary follows street sides and garden fences for much of its length. They share a sports centre, the Rycroft Primary Care Centre and a community learning centre in Ryhill.
