Ackton is old: it appears as Aitone in the Domesday Book of 1086 and as Aicton about 1166. The Featherstone family lived at Ackton Hall, now demolished, and Ackton Hall Colliery opened in 1873; after the 1984 to 1985 strike it was the first pit to close, because geological problems had made further work impossible. Ackton was its own civil parish from 1866 until 1938, when it merged with Snydale.
The houses today are on a handful of streets off Ackton Lane: West End Avenue, Throstle Crest, Gothic Mount, Warren Drive and Ackton Hall Crescent, with Ackton Close and Stretton Close nearby. Sewerbridge Beck runs nearby, and the Worcester Bosch site and other works lie a short way off, so give directions from Ackton Lane rather than from the industrial estate roads.

The B6134 is the road to know: as Loscoe Lane it comes south from the A655 near Normanton, as Ackton Lane it passes the hamlet, and as Sewerbridge Lane and Havertop Lane it continues towards North Featherstone, and the Link 62 roundabout is also on the B6134. Castleford Lane and Common Side Lane are the other lanes nearby.
