Moving in Yorkshire: what to know first

Search for removals in Yorkshire and two kinds of business come up: removal firms that send a lorry and several people, and a man with a van. This is the second. One driver does the loading and the driving, and the load space is 3.4m long, 1.3m between the wheel arches and 1.7m high. That takes a flat or a one- or two-bed home in one go; a fuller house goes in two loads and a longer day. For a large family house in one trip, a bigger removals firm is the better fit.

Yorkshire moves change character with the ground. West of Bradford the Pennine valleys bring stone terraces on steep, cambered streets, and in Calderdale houses are built into the valley sides. North into Craven and Nidderdale, homes sit in villages and farm lanes inside protected landscape, where the last mile is narrow and slow. East towards Tadcaster and the A1(M) the land is flat, and newer estates with drives load quickly. Steps, lanes and parking set the time more than the miles do.

Some details catch people out. The van is about 2.5m tall, so it cannot use a car park with a 2.1m barrier, and city-centre flats in Leeds and Bradford are reached from legal loading points rather than the front door. Old stone houses often have cellars and steep, narrow stairs. Upright pianos are fine with notice. Goods in transit cover is £10,000 and public liability £5 million, which managed blocks sometimes ask to see.

Yorkshire: the local picture

West Yorkshire is the centre of the cover: Bradford, Leeds, Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield, from Todmorden at the Lancashire end of the Calder Valley to Pontefract and South Elmsall in the east. The M62 crosses the middle, and the M1 runs up from the south to join the A1(M) near Aberford.

North Yorkshire has run its own services as one council since April 2023, but the old district names still describe where you are. The former Harrogate district brings in Harrogate, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge, with Pateley Bridge the only town in Nidderdale. Former Craven is Skipton and the villages towards Grassington, much of it inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Former Selby district is reached past Leeds: Tadcaster sits on the Wharfe between Leeds and York, with its old stone bridge joining the two halves of the town, and the villages around it are on the list. York, Ripon, Selby itself, and all of South and East Yorkshire are outside the usual area: those go as long-distance moves, booked ahead.

Man and van services across Yorkshire

Removals here mean a few different jobs. A whole home goes under house removals, flats and managed blocks under flat and apartment removals, and term-end moves for Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield students under student removals. Boxes and wrapping can be done for you with the packing service, and a move beyond Yorkshire is long distance removals.

Frequently asked questions: removals in Yorkshire

Are you a removal company?

No. It is one driver with one long wheelbase Ford Transit, based in Bradford. That suits flats, smaller houses and part-moves across West Yorkshire and the nearer parts of North Yorkshire. A large house usually goes in two loads, and a removal firm with a lorry suits a big home moving in one trip.

Which parts of Yorkshire do you cover?

All of West Yorkshire, and the former Harrogate, Craven and Selby districts of North Yorkshire. York, Ripon, Selby, South Yorkshire and East Yorkshire are long-distance moves, arranged in advance with a fixed price.

How long does it take to reach Harrogate or Skipton from Bradford?

Roughly 35 to 50 minutes to either, depending on traffic. Knaresborough is about 40 to 55 minutes, and Pateley Bridge or Boroughbridge roughly 50 to 65.

Is the price fixed for a move from Leeds to a Dales village?

Yes. Send photos and both addresses, and the price is agreed before the van sets off. Narrow lanes or a long carry at the village end are allowed for in that figure, so mention them.

Will you take apart beds and wardrobes for the move?

Beds and flat-pack furniture are dismantled and put back together as part of the price. Say which pieces need it when you ask for a quote so the time is planned in.

Can you move me at short notice in Yorkshire?

Sometimes, when the diary allows. Same-day or next-day moves depend on what is already booked, so ask with your postcodes and photos and you will be told what is possible.
