Boroughbridge: what to know before moving day
The town grew around its bridge. The Borough Bridge, dating from 1562 and widened in 1784 by John Carr, carries the B6265 over the Ure, and the B6265 then runs through the centre as Bridge Street, Fishergate, St James Square and High Street. Boroughbridge has 76 listed buildings, many of them 18th-century brick cottages and shops with pantile roofs, and the Crown Hotel on Horsefair is a former coaching inn from the Great North Road days.
St James Square has the library and the Black Bull, and the Market Well of 1875 is listed. Horsefair has the post office and the Methodist church, and there is a car park on Back Lane off Hall Square. The Devil's Arrows, three Bronze Age standing stones up to 22 feet tall, are beside Roecliffe Lane on the edge of town. The primary school is on York Road and Boroughbridge High School on Wetherby Road, and there is a Morrisons supermarket.
How the van gets to Boroughbridge
From Knaresborough the A6055 runs north-east through Ferrensby and Minskip into Boroughbridge. The A1(M) now passes the town on its bypass, and the B6265 links the centre with Ripon to the north-west. Bridge Street has a 20 mph limit, so allow a little time for the town-centre stretch.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 65 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Is Boroughbridge still on the A1?
No. The A1 used to run through the town and cross the Ure here, but a bypass now carries it, today as the A1(M). The old route through the centre is the B6265.
