Man and van in Ripon, from Bradford
Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 30 miles from Ripon (50-65 minutes by road). Jobs in Ripon are quoted as one fixed figure, agreed before we set off, with the drive already in it.
Moving in Ripon: what to know first
The cathedral city has a compact medieval core. Market Place is setted, with the obelisk in the middle, and the streets running off it, such as Westgate, Fishergate, Duck Hill, High Skellgate and Kirkgate, are narrow and partly one way, with Kirkgate paved for walkers up to the cathedral. Stalls go up on Thursdays from 7.30am to 3pm and on a smaller Saturday market until 2pm, so a flat over a shop there is loaded from a side street on those days.
North of the River Ure, Ure Bank is reached over North Bridge on the A6108. Ure Bank Terrace and Ure Bank Top are older rows, and Station Drive and Station Close sit near where the city's railway station once stood. West of the centre, Bishopton runs along the River Laver, with Bishopton Lane, Ash Bank Road and the Doublegates closes, and Lark Hill and Kirkby Road sit next to the army barracks on Clotherholme Road.
The south side is mostly estate housing. Quarry Moor, off Harrogate Road, has Moorside Avenue, Greystone Close and Kingstonia Gardens, and Hell Wath lies further west, next to the Taylor Wimpey streets at Fountains Walk on West Lane. Between them, Whitcliffe and the roads named after royals, Windsor Road, Balmoral Road and Sandringham Road, are wider suburban roads, where the van has more room at the kerb than in the centre.
Parking and access in Ripon
North Yorkshire Council runs the city car parks: Cathedral car park on Victoria Grove with 193 spaces, Marshall Way with a three-hour limit, St Marygate, the Arcade, and Market Place on Queen Street with 56 spaces and a one-hour stay. None of the council entries lists a height barrier, but at about 2.5m the van will not clear a 2.1m barrier anywhere, so a bay or the kerb outside is looked at first.
- Market Place is setted, and Westgate, Fishergate, Duck Hill, Queen Street and High Skellgate are narrow and partly one way, so the van stops where the street allows and pieces are carried.
- The market fills Market Place on Thursdays from 7.30am to 3pm and on Saturdays until 2pm, and the council's Market Place car park on Queen Street is closed on Thursdays until 6pm.
- Ure Bank is reached over North Bridge on the A6108 North Road, which carries the Masham and Thirsk traffic, so the van turns off into Ure Bank Terrace or Station Drive to load.
- Florentines Court in the centre has a 2.3m height limit, too low for the Transit at about 2.5m, and the roads inside the Claro and Deverell barracks are private.
- The A61 Ripon Bypass runs east of the centre past Dallamires Lane, and Boroughbridge Road (B6265) carries racecourse traffic on race days.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Ripon
Can the van park on Market Place on a Thursday?
No, not while the market is up. Stalls trade on Market Place from 7.30am to 3pm on Thursdays, and the council's Market Place car park on Queen Street does not open that day until 6pm. A flat over a shop there is loaded from a side street such as Queen Street or Fishergate, or the move goes on another day.
How much does a man and van cost in Ripon?
Every Ripon job gets one fixed price, agreed before the van sets off from Bradford, and it covers the 30-mile drive. What moves it is the volume, the carry, such as a second-floor flat off Westgate against a house on Windsor Road, and how far the load goes. Send photos and both postcodes, and the prices page explains the rest.
Is the Clotherholme barracks site being built on yet?
Not yet for homes. Homes England has outline consent for 1,300 homes on the Claro and Deverell Barracks land, with clearance at Deverell due to start from late 2026, the Royal Engineers due to leave in 2028 and first homes expected that year. Moves now are to the roads around it, such as Lark Hill and Kirkby Road.
Who collects an old sofa or bed in Ripon?
North Yorkshire Council does, for a charge: its bulky waste service collects beds, sofas, fridges and washing machines, booked online, from a minimum of 37 pounds for up to two items. Our van only carries the things you are keeping or buying.
