One stair up from the shop: moving out of a flat in Ripon's old centre
Above a shop, a Ripon flat usually has one narrow staircase from a street door, and the street outside is tight. Westgate, Fishergate, Duck Hill and High Skellgate are narrow and partly one way, and Market Place itself is setted with stalls on Thursdays and Saturdays. The van waits where it can, in a bay on a side street or in a council car park such as Marshall Way or Victoria Grove, and each piece is wheeled to it. Beds come apart at the top of the stair, which is often what gets a double frame round the landing.
The courtyards are a separate problem. Some are reached from yards behind the street frontage, and Florentines Court has a 2.3m height limit, too low for a Transit about 2.5m tall, so loading happens from the street at the arch. Flats at Ure Bank, north of the river, are reached off the A6108 North Road rather than the one-way centre. Ask the managing agent whether moves must be booked, and say which floor you are on and whether there is a lift.
Before you move out of a Ripon flat
- Give the street the door opens onto, as the one-way loop round Market Place decides where the van stops
- Measure the narrowest turn of the stair against the sofa, not only the front door
- If the flat is reached under an arch or a height bar, say so: anything lower than about 2.5m means loading from the street
- Avoid Thursday for a flat on Market Place, when the stalls are out from 7.30am
- Ask your managing agent whether moves must be booked, and whether a lift can be reserved

How many floors, how far the carry is from the nearest place the van can wait and how much there is decide the time; one fixed price, agreed first, includes the drive from Bradford. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Flat Removals in Ripon: your questions
Can the van stop outside my flat on Market Place?
Only when the market is not on, and only for loading where it is allowed. On Thursdays and Saturdays the stalls are up, so the van waits on a side street and everything is wheeled round.
My flat is up two flights with no lift. Is that a problem?
No, just more carrying, which is in the price. Tell us the floors and the stair width, and send a photo of the tightest turn.
Will a sofa go up a shop-flat stair in the centre?
Often, with the feet off and the sofa stood on end. Measure the stair width and the landing turn first, and a photo helps decide before the day.
Do you move flats at weekends?
Yes, Saturdays and Sundays included, between 8am and 8pm. Saturday morning has the smaller market on Market Place, so a flat right on it is better moved in the afternoon.
