Above the shopfronts on the High Street and around the Market Place, flats are reached by one staircase from a street door, often with a tight landing at the top. Sofas come down on end, beds and existing wardrobes are taken apart in the flat, and loading follows a set order because there is only one way out. Stopping outside is short, and the Thursday market removes the Market Place altogether, so central flat moves are best on another day.

Newer blocks are kinder on the stairs but have their own rules. Lifts may need booking with the managing agent, communal hallways may need protecting, and some buildings set moving hours. Retirement blocks may also have a house manager to let know in advance. If you are moving into a flat from a larger house, measure the new rooms before moving day and decide what is coming, because only what fits the new rooms needs to come.
