Thursday market, the Shambles loop and a one-shot bypass

Anything in the centre has to work around two fixed facts. The market takes the Market Place and the Town Hall island from nine until three every Thursday, and the streets around the Shambles run as a tight one-way loop over a narrow bridge that is a scheduled ancient monument, so a long van commits to the full circuit rather than nipping back. Flats above the High Street shops are stairs only.

The newer estates are easier but not automatic. Micklethwaite, Sandbeck and Spofforth Hill have curved feeder roads with cars parked both sides and turning heads that a 3.4-metre load fills completely, so we want the house number and some idea of the frontage before we arrive. The A1(M) is the fast approach, but only junctions 45 and 46 are usable and overshooting one costs several miles.
