Over-the-shop flats in Pateley's listed High Street
Several of the High Street buildings went up in the 18th century as shops with living space over them, and the listing for one pair still describes shops with flats above. Inside, stairs are narrow and often turn, ceilings are lower than in a new block, and the door to the flat may be off a passage or a carriage arch. Furniture comes down in parts where it can: a bed frame is dismantled, flat-pack drawers are taken apart, and a sofa is measured against the stair before the day.
Parking shapes the plan more than the floor number. High Street is a 20 mph road with shops either side, Park Road and Church Street are partly one-way, and Back High Street is closed to vehicles in places. Nidd Walk car park has 66 spaces and Southlands 64, both a short walk from the bottom of the street, so on a busy day the van stands there and the carry is done on a trolley.
Before a flat move in central Pateley
- Find out which door the flat uses, front, side passage or back yard, and say so when you book
- Measure the tightest turn on the stair; that decides whether a sofa or wardrobe goes whole or in parts
- Car park charges run from 8am to 6pm, so a long load in the centre is easier booked into the evening
- Clear the landing and the stair before the van arrives, as these buildings have little space to stack
- Keep bedding and a kettle in one marked box for the first night

Flat & Apartment Removals in Pateley Bridge: your questions
Can the van park on High Street outside my flat?
Only briefly and where the lines allow, because it is the B6265 through the town. For anything longer the van waits at Nidd Walk or Southlands and the boxes are wheeled up.
My flat is up two flights in an old building. Is that a problem?
No, but say so when you book. Old stone stairs are narrow, so bulky pieces are measured first and anything that comes apart is taken apart.
Can you move a flat in the evening?
Yes, the van works until 8pm. An evening move also avoids the hours when the shops below are open and the street is full of shoppers.
