Pateley Bridge: what to know before moving day

The river splits the town, and the parish boundary follows it. High and Low Bishopside, whose council goes by the name Pateley Bridge Town Council, stops at the Nidd. West of the water, the post office, the Nidderdale showground, Nidderdale High School and Bridgehouse Gate all fall in Bewerley parish instead. The three-arched bridge of the late 18th century carries the B6165 between the two halves, so say which bank you are on when you book.

High Street climbs east from the bridge as the B6265 and is lined with listed stone shops and houses. The Pateley Club is dated 1662, the Crown is early 19th century, and the oldest sweet shop in England trades from a building of 1661. Behind the main street are King Street, Church Street and Millfield Street, with later closes such as Springfield Way and Bishop Way up the hill. The Nidderdale Show, the last Dales agricultural show of the year, fills the riverside showground once a year, so check its date before fixing a move near it.

The town has an odd link with Bradford. Bradford Corporation owned the Nidd Valley Light Railway, which ran up the dale to Lofthouse from its own Pateley station between 1907 and 1937, and the Nidd Aqueduct was built to carry water from the upper dale to Chellow Heights service reservoir on the edge of Bradford. The old branch line from Nidd Valley Junction has long gone, and the nearest station is now Harrogate.

How the van gets to Pateley Bridge

The route data from Bradford runs up the A658 to Pool, crosses the Wharfe at Leathley Bridge on the B6161, then heads north on the B6451 over the moor to meet the B6165, which follows the Nidd into town through Glasshouses. High Street is a 20 mph street. The B6265 leaves it eastwards for Ripon up Blazefield Bank and westwards over Greenhow Hill for Grassington, a descent of 16 to 19 per cent coming back into Pateley.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 65 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

It depends on the side of the river. High Street and the east bank are High and Low Bishopside; Bridgehouse Gate, the showground and the high school on the west bank are Bewerley. Both come under North Yorkshire Council, and the postcode district is HG3 either way.
