Wilsill: what to know before moving day
The village is older than it looks from the main road. It appears in the Domesday Book as Wifelshale, and its listed buildings are mostly 17th-century stone houses: Bridge House, Byrill Farmhouse, the Manor House with its pair of barns, and Ivy Cottage and Dalestone, two cottages dated 1672. Holly Laithe and Kiln House stand just outside. Quoins, mullioned windows and chamfered doorways are typical, so check the width of an old doorway before a big sofa or wardrobe is booked in.
Wilsill has a Methodist chapel, the Anglican church of St Michael and All Angels and a pub, the Birch Tree Inn. Byril Beck runs through the village, and The Raikes and Brimham Rocks Road lead off to the north. A bus eight times a day links it with Pateley Bridge and Harrogate. The railway ran along the southern edge of the village but never had a station.
How the van gets to Wilsill
Lupton Bank, the B6165, is the road through Wilsill, with the limit stepping from 60 down to 40 and 30 mph as it comes in. West it runs to Glasshouses and Pateley Bridge, east to Ripley and the A61 for Harrogate. From Bradford the route data goes through Otley and up the B6451 before joining the B6165 in the valley.
