Bewerley: what to know before moving day
The village grew around a grange of Fountains Abbey. Bewerley Grange Chapel, built for the monks by Abbot Marmaduke Huby, served as a house and later a school before it was restored as a chapel in 1965. Beside it is Bewerley Old Hall, with a timber-framed core of the late 16th or early 17th century. The Yorke family's newer hall of 1815 was demolished in 1925, and its garden tower survives at Abbey Lodge. Most houses are gritstone with stone slate roofs, so measure an old doorway before booking a large piece of furniture in.
The biggest site in the village is Bewerley Park Centre for Outdoor Education. Fosse Gill runs down past the Old Hall and under Turner Bridge, and Yorke's Folly, built in the 18th century to look like a ruined church, stands on the hill to the south. Because the parish takes in Pateley post office, the showground, Nidderdale High School and Bridgehouse Gate, plenty of people with a Pateley Bridge address actually live in Bewerley.
How the van gets to Bewerley
From Pateley High Street the B6265 crosses the Nidd and becomes Street Lane, then Hebden Road on the way up to Greenhow; New Church Street and Peat Lane lead off it towards the village. The route data from Bradford can also arrive from above, leaving the A59 for Greenhow Hill Road and Duck Street Lane and dropping down Hebden Road into the valley.
