Glasshouses: what to know before moving day
The landmark is Glasshouses Mill, built by the Metcalfe family between 1812 and 1814 on the bank of the Nidd and used for flax, hemp and finally rope until 1972. It is Grade II listed, with three ranges round a courtyard, and its conversion to housing was announced in 2017. If you are moving into or out of the mill, say so when you book, as a converted mill has different entrances and stairs from a cottage. The mill dam of 1830 on the north bank is now used for fishing and water sports.
Newer houses stand on Lupton Close, Lupton Springs, Harewell Close and Mill Race. Glasshouses Community Primary School uses the school the Metcalfes built in 1861, the village hall is Broadbelt Hall, and May Day is marked on the green with maypole dancing. The Nidd Valley railway ran right through the village but never had a station here, only a siding shared by the mill and the gasworks.
How the van gets to Glasshouses
The B6165 passes the village as Ripley Bank and Lupton Bank, linking Pateley Bridge with Ripley, where it meets the A61 for Harrogate; the bus between Harrogate and Pateley runs along it. Blazefield Bank, part of the B6265, climbs north of the village towards Ripon, and Sandy Lane is the minor road up from the valley floor.
