Moving in Fountains Abbey: what to know first
The homes around the West Gate are cottages, farms and barn conversions on the edge of the National Trust estate, among them Messenger Barn, Vyner Barn, Gresham Barn, Mallorie Barn, Aislabie Barn and DeGrey Byre, with The Bungalow and Ruffe House close by. Several of the estate roads beyond the gate are closed to motor vehicles and kept for visitors on foot, so the van needs to know which entrance and which yard serves your door.
Fountains Lane is a narrow asphalt lane with no centre line. Just north of the West Gate it crosses the Skell on a small bridge with a 3-tonne weight limit, so a loaded van comes and goes by Hebden Bank or by How Hill Road instead. Car Park A and Car Park B are National Trust car parks for visitors, so do not count on them for a van or for friends' cars on the day without asking the estate first.
Fountains Abbey: the local picture
The Cistercian abbey was founded in 1132 in the valley of the River Skell and dissolved in 1539; its ruins are now part of Studley Royal Park, owned by the National Trust. A few hundred metres from the West Gate stands Fountains Hall, built by Stephen Proctor between 1598 and 1611 partly with stone from the abbey, and Grade I listed. There is a Bradford link too: in 2016 a partnership including the University of Bradford used ground-penetrating radar to map several hundred graves at the abbey.
Around the gate are Fountains Cottage, Abbey Cottage, Abbey Stores and West Gate Lodge, which the National Trust lets as holiday cottages, plus homes and farms such as The Bungalow, Ruffe House, Park House Farm and Fountains Farm. Park House, a 17th-century farmhouse largely rebuilt in 1810, has 18th-century rusticated gate piers with ball finials at its drive.
How the van gets to Fountains Abbey
From Bradford the van goes by Pool and the B6161 to the A61, then the B6165 and the lanes over Scarah Bank and Hebden Bank to Fountains Lane. The visitor car park by the West Gate is for visitors, so for a move to a house on the estate, give its name and ask the Trust where a van can wait. The Ripon Roweller bus, route 139, also calls here.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 65 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Fountains Abbey
Can you move things into a holiday cottage or house on the Fountains estate?
Yes, as long as the van can reach the door. Tell us the property name, such as West Gate Lodge or Park House, and whether the estate office has given a time or a gate code, and the move will be planned round that.
Why would the van not take the short road north to the B6265?
Because the little bridge over the Skell just north of the West Gate has a 3-tonne weight limit. A loaded van is planned round it, by How Hill Road and Markington or by Hebden Bank, which adds a few miles but keeps to roads built for it.
Is a Fountains Abbey address Ripon or Harrogate?
Ripon for the post: HG4 is the Ripon district, and the homes here sit in Markington with Wallerthwaite parish. The council is North Yorkshire Council, and the World Heritage Site itself is run day to day by the National Trust.
