Converted villas, half-landings and the ring road round the Stray

The big Victorian and Edwardian villas around the Duchy Estate, Harlow Hill and Oatlands were split into flats and maisonettes decades ago, and almost none of them gained a lift. A fridge freezer going to a second-floor flat has to come up a shared staircase with at least one half-landing turn, usually with the handrail on the wrong side. We measure the turn before we lift, because an American-style unit that clears the front door can still be stopped dead at the bend.

Parking is the other half of the job. The Stray funnels approaches onto a handful of perimeter roads with nothing to pull onto, and the conservation streets off Montpellier and Royal Parade are narrow, one-way and tightly controlled. The Jubilee and Victoria multi-storeys are no use to us either, since a Transit LWB will not clear the height barrier. Often, but it depends on the half-landing rather than the front door. Measure the narrowest point of the turn and the width of the flat door, send those with a photo, and we will tell you before the day whether it goes up whole, needs its doors off, or will not go at all.

Do you take the old appliance away?

Yes, if you tell us when you book. The old machine comes out of the kitchen as the new one goes in and leaves with us that day for a household waste recycling centre. If you would rather keep it, it can go to a garage, a hallway or an outbuilding instead.
