The historic core sits on a cliff above the Nidd, and Kirkgate, Waterside and the cobbled Water Bag Bank are steep, narrow and partly setted. A long wheelbase often cannot get closer than the top of the hill, so a long carry down flights of stone steps is routine rather than exceptional.
