Off the gorge side, onto the A59, onto the A1(M)
Kirkgate, Waterside and the cobbled Water Bag Bank are steep, narrow and partly setted, and a long wheelbase van with 3.4 metres of load behind it often gets no nearer than the top of the hill. Riverside and castle-side cottages have no off-street access at all, so a long carry up flights of stone steps is routine rather than unlucky. That carry, not the mileage, is what makes a gorge-side collection a slow morning.
Once the van is loaded the rest is easy in a way most towns round here are not. The A59 runs east to junction 47 and from there it is the A1(M), south for the Midlands and London or north for the Tyne and Scotland, with nothing to crawl through to reach it. Your things go on the van here and come off at the new address, carried in by the same driver, with no depot in between.
What Knaresborough long distance & nationwide usually involves
- Market Place is taken by the market every Wednesday from half past seven until three, which removes the only realistic loading space for town-centre properties, so we book a long run for another day where we can
- High Bridge and Low Bridge are the only two crossings of the Nidd in town, both narrow with blind approaches, and if one is shut the other is the only way over
- The historic streets are double-yellowed with very limited waiting, so a central load is either an early window or a shuttle from the Conyngham Hall or Chapel Street car parks
- Aspin, Eastfield and the newer housing at Grimbald Crag have drives and turning space, which takes an hour off the loading end of a long day
- 3.4m by 1.3m by 1.7m of load space covers a lot, but not a four-bedroom house with a full garage, so anything beyond a flat is quoted from photos and a room-by-room list
Where in Knaresborough we work
- Waterside and Kirkgategorge-side cottages with no off-street access, so plan for a long carry up the steps
- Market Place and High Streetflats over the shops, and no loading space at all on a Wednesday
- Aspin1960s to 80s family estates with drives and turning room, the easiest long-distance loads in town
- Stockwell and Eastfieldinter-war and post-war semis, usually a job relocation rather than a first flat
- Grimbald Crag and Scrivennewer executive housing, rarely one Transit load, so the list gets done properly first
- St James Business Park, Grimbald Crag Roadunit and office relocations loaded off a yard and straight out onto the A59
If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Knaresborough and the surrounding HG5 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.
Common Knaresborough runs
- Knaresborough → LondonA59 to junction 47 and south; a single long day if we load early
- Knaresborough → Edinburgh or the North Eastthe same four miles of A59, then the A1(M) the other way
- Bradford → Knaresborough → the South Coastthe van comes over on the A658 through Yeadon and Pool, loads, and is back on fast roads inside the hour
What it costs
The distance, the size of the load and how far the van has to stand from the door are what set the price, and it is fixed before the job starts. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Knaresborough from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: long distance & nationwide in Knaresborough
Do you charge extra because Knaresborough is in North Yorkshire?
No. There is no travel surcharge anywhere in the area we cover, and this is a 40 to 55 minute run from Bradford on the A658. On a long-distance job the price is built from the distance to your new address and the size of the load, not from which side of a county boundary the collection sits.
Can you get a van to a cottage on Waterside?
Often not right to the door. Waterside and the lanes off it are steep, narrow and partly setted, and the honest answer is that we usually work from the top of the hill and carry. Tell us the address when you enquire and the carry gets built into the time instead of discovered on the morning.
Is Knaresborough to London done in a single day?
Usually, if we are loaded and away by mid-morning, because junction 47 is four miles from your door and almost all of the driving is motorway. Beyond roughly 250 miles we often collect in the afternoon and deliver the next morning rather than unload in the dark, and you will know which before you book.
