Converted villas, half-landing turns and no lift anywhere
The big stone villas on the Duchy Estate, at Harlow Hill and around Oatlands were built as single houses and most are now flats and maisonettes. That means a long gravel drive you cannot reverse a loaded van up in a hurry, a shared Victorian staircase used by three or four households, and at least one half-landing turn where a three-door wardrobe has to be stood on its end. Measure the turn, not just the doorway, because the turn is what stops things.
Collections tend to be out at the edges rather than in the middle: the trade units at Cardale Park off Otley Road, Hornbeam Park at the south end of town, and the commercial units at Claro Court on Claro Road. All three load easily. The centre is the awkward half, since the conservation streets around Montpellier and Royal Parade are narrow, one-way and tightly controlled, and the Jubilee and Victoria multi-storeys are too low for a Transit LWB to enter at all.
What Harrogate furniture & large item transport usually involves
- The Stray's 200 acres wrap the town centre, so approaches funnel onto a handful of perimeter roads with no parking on the Stray side - a central drop means the nearest legal bay and a walk in
- Pay-and-display and resident permit zones cover most central streets, with limited-waiting bays and double yellows on the shopping streets, so a flat above a shop usually wants an early start or a suspended bay arranged first
- Convention Centre shows and Great Yorkshire Showground events gridlock Wetherby Road and Ripon Road for days at a time - give us the date and we will route around it or come early
- Store delivery leaves a wardrobe in the first dry room on a date they choose; we carry it up the villa staircase to the room you want, often on the day you ring
- We can move the piece you are replacing into a spare room, the garage or on to whoever is having it next, or carry it out and take it away with us on the same visit

Frequently asked questions: furniture & large item transport in Harrogate
Can you get a wardrobe up to a flat in a converted Harrogate villa?
Usually, but the half-landing turn decides it rather than the front door. Send a photo of the turn and the width of the staircase and we will tell you before you buy whether it goes up assembled, needs doors off, or has to be flat-packed.
Do you charge extra to come out to Harrogate from Bradford?
No. It is 19 miles on the A658 through Greengates and Apperley Bridge and past the airport, and there is no travel surcharge. The price is built on the size of the item, the stairs at each end and the time the job takes.
Can you park outside a flat on a central Harrogate street?
Often not for long. Most central streets are pay-and-display or permit with limited-waiting bays, and the Jubilee and Victoria multi-storeys have height barriers a Transit will not clear. We stop as close as the restrictions allow and trolley the rest.
