Markington: what to know before moving day
Everything centres on High Street: St Michael's Church of 1843 to 1844, the Church of England primary and nursery school, the village hall, the Yorkshire Hussar Inn and the post office and general store. Markington Hall, a 17th-century house once owned by William Wilberforce, stands with a disused watermill, Low Mill, in its grounds. Newer homes are on closes such as Beechwood Close, Hawthorn Close, Kingwood and High Garth.
Wallerthwaite, the other half of the parish name, is a deserted medieval village just to the south. The older farmhouses mix gritstone, limestone and cobble with pantile or stone slate roofs: Hincks Hall was refronted in brick in the 18th century, and Brook House is stone and cobble. Markenfield Hall, a moated manor house of the early 14th century, is close by but forms a tiny parish of its own.
How the van gets to Markington
The A61 between Harrogate and Ripon is the main road nearby. The route data leaves it at the roundabout by Ripley and comes over Scarah Bank, Hebden Bank and Dole Bank, then Dam Lane into High Street, which is 30 mph through the village. Westerns Lane, Thwaites Lane and Hinks Hall Lane branch off it.
