York is about 27 miles away by the B6265, the A1(M) and the A59, and Leeds about 28 down the A61, so a first-year drop at either is a morning's work with time to carry the room up to the flat. Halls give each new student an arrival slot in September, and the pick-up from home in Ripon is timed back from it. Durham is about 54 miles up the A1(M) and Newcastle about 68, which makes a longer day, so loading starts early.
Boarders are a smaller job but a real one. Ripon Grammar's School House and Johnson House hold about 100 pupils, and a trunk, a bike and boxes may need to go between a family home and the school on Clotherholme Road at the start or end of term. One room fills only a corner of the 3.4m load space, so everything lies flat and nothing rides loose.
