Tadcaster: what to know before moving day

The A659 is the main street right through town, under several names: Wetherby Road and Kelcbar Hill from the west, then Westgate, Bridge Street, Tadcaster Bridge, High Street, Commercial Street and York Road on the far side. The bridge dates from the early 1700s, partly collapsed after flooding on 29 December 2015 and reopened, repaired and widened, on 3 February 2017. The streets by it, including the north end of the High Street and Wharfe Terrace, flooded again in February 2022.

Three breweries are still here. The John Smith's brewery of 1883, with its tall listed chimney, stands at the southern end of the High Street; Samuel Smith's Old Brewery faces it across narrow New Street; and the Tower Brewery is the third. Tadcaster Bridge is one of only two road crossings, the other being the A64 bypass bridge. The Ark, a late 15th-century half-timbered building on Kirkgate, is now the Town Council offices, and the market is held on Thursdays in the Social Club car park on St Joseph's Street.

Housing ranges from the terraces near the centre to estates such as Calcaria Road and Crescent, Auster Bank, the Edgerton streets and the Kelcbar roads. Say which side of the river you are on when you book, since it decides the route in.

How the van gets to Tadcaster

Tadcaster sits on the A64, the A659 and the A162, about 3 miles east of junction 44 of the A1(M). From Bradford the van goes out through Leeds and along the A64, which since 1978 has bypassed the town about 600 metres to the south. The A659 comes in from Wetherby past Newton Kyme and, on the east side of the bridge, leaves as York Road.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 45 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Not in the town. Tadcaster station, on the Church Fenton to Harrogate line, closed to passengers in January 1964. The nearest stations are Ulleskelf, Church Fenton and York, so a move here is planned by road.
