Toulston: what to know before moving day
Tadcaster Grammar School, founded in 1557, moved out of the town in stages after West Riding County Council bought Toulston Lodge in 1956, and it has been wholly on the Toulston site since 1959 to 1960. Toulston Lodge, with its original fireplaces, is still on the site. Around the school the land is open farmland: the Organic Pantry farm shop, Croft Lane, Watson's Lane and a short road called Toulston View are the named places nearby.
Toulston is also the name of a deserted medieval village about a mile south-west of Newton Kyme, whose site is now a scheduled monument. Rudgate, the line of a Roman road, crosses the parish here as a lane and bridleway, and the old railway to Wetherby is now the Wetherby Railway Path, part of National Cycle Route 665.
How the van gets to Toulston
The A659 is the road to use. From Tadcaster it runs west as Wetherby Road and Kelcbar Hill, past Toulston, and on to Newton Kyme and Boston Spa. From Bradford the usual way is through Leeds on the A64, turning off for Tadcaster, or via Wetherby and the A659 from the other side.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 45 to 60 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Why does Tadcaster Grammar School have a Toulston address?
Because it is in Toulston, not in Tadcaster itself. The school outgrew its town premises in the 1950s, moved to the Toulston Lodge site, and John Smith's brewery took over the old site in town.
