Newton Kyme: what to know before moving day
A paper and packaging mill in the parish closed in 2001 and stood derelict until 2016, when a new set of houses was built on the site. Residential streets on the map include Fairfax Drive, Fairfax Gardens, Papyrus Villas, St Andrews Walk, Barwick Place, Burden Mews and Wharf View, most of them 20 mph roads. Bar Lane and the A659, called High Street where it passes the village, are the through roads.
The older buildings are magnesian limestone. St Andrew's Church, with 12th-century origins, is Grade I listed, and Newton Kyme Hall, built in the 18th century by Admiral Robert Fairfax, is Grade II*. The Rectory of 1768, the Old Schoolhouse of 1787 and the Dower House are listed too. West of the village is a scheduled site with two Roman forts, and the 1847 railway viaduct over the Wharfe, Wharfe Bridge, now carries the Wetherby Railway Path cycle route.
How the van gets to Newton Kyme
The A659 is the route both ways. From Wetherby it comes east through Boston Spa to the village, and from Tadcaster it runs west past Toulston. A listed milestone on the A659 still reads "Tadcaster & Otley Road". From Bradford, going via Wetherby or via Leeds and the A64 to Tadcaster both work, depending on traffic.

What became of the Newton Kyme railway station?
It closed. The station on the Harrogate to Church Fenton line opened in 1847 and shut in 1964, and the tracks were lifted in 1966. The station building, beside the old level crossing with Wetherby Road, is now a private house.
Newton Kyme is close to Boston Spa, so is it a Leeds address?
No, it is in North Yorkshire. It was in the West Riding until 1974 and Selby District until 2023, and North Yorkshire Council runs it now. The Leeds boundary, with Boston Spa and Thorp Arch on the far side, is very close.
