The village is compact: Street Lane and Braegate Lane are the main roads, with Hagg Lane, Old Lane Court and Manor Farm Court off them. Ye Old Sun Inn, an early 18th-century listed pub in colourwashed brick, is the one pub, and St Paul's Church stands in the centre. Colton Lodge, a three-storey 18th-century brick house, and its 1764 pigeoncote are listed as well.
There are no supermarkets in Colton; for those people go to Tadcaster or York, and neighbouring Copmanthorpe has a wider choice of shops. Colton Junction, where the line from Normanton meets the East Coast Main Line, is just outside the village, and the plans for High Speed 2 have it joining the main line here too. A move is a road job all the same, as trains do not stop in Colton.

From Bradford the van takes the A64 out of Leeds, past Tadcaster, and comes off at the Bilbrough Top junction, where Colton Lane heads south towards the village. Colton Lane carries on to Appleton Roebuck, about 2 miles further south. York Pullman's number 21 bus runs between York Piccadilly and Colton.
