Bilbrough: what to know before moving day
Main Street has The Three Hares pub, the village hall and St James' Church, which has a Fairfax chapel where Thomas Fairfax, the parliamentary commander-in-chief in the Civil War, is buried with his wife. Back Lane, Cat Lane and Moor Lane lead off it, all at 30 mph inside the village.
Several houses are listed. The Old Manor House of 1670 is in magnesian limestone, Bilbrough Grange of 1755 and Rose Cottage are brick, and Bilbrough Manor was built in 1901 to 1902 to a design by Temple Moore. For a listed or 17th-century house, check the width of the doors and stairs before booking anything bulky. West of the village is Ingle Edge Hill, and the land around is farmland on a moraine about 150 feet above sea level.
How the van gets to Bilbrough
The village is reached from the A64 at the Bilbrough Top junction. A flyover opened there on 9 June 2005, replacing an old junction that was a known accident blackspot, and Redhill Field Lane is the link road up to the village. Service stations, hotels and food outlets stand either side of the A64 at this point. From Bradford the van joins the A64 in Leeds and stays on it past Tadcaster.
