Moving in Grimston: what to know first
Grimston has no public streets. The homes are reached by the estate drive off the A162 London Road, through parkland the Fielden family kept when the house was sold, so the approach is longer and more private than a village street. Agree with whoever manages the drive where the van can stop and turn near your part of the house, the coach house or a lodge.
Grimston Park itself is listed Grade II*, and several of the buildings around it are listed too. Inside a converted country house or stable range, measure the doors, stairs and any tight turns before booking a large sofa or wardrobe, and send the figures with the booking.
Grimston: the local picture
Most addresses here are parts of the old house or the buildings around it. The list entries describe Burton's coach house, east of the house, as converted into dwellings, and his stable block and nine-bay riding school as later put to other uses. North Lodge, Bantam Cottage and Rose Cottage, a limestone lodge with a rustic porch, are the other named houses. With a courtyard, a gateway or a shared drive between the van and your door, send a photo of the approach so the loading spot is agreed first.
Fourteen buildings in the parish are listed, and all but one belong to the park: the Egyptian-style Grimston Tower, a water tower in magnesian limestone, the north lodges topped by kneeling warriors, the fountain with three dolphins and a pair of obelisk walls. James VI and I stayed at Grimston Park, then Sir Edward Stanhope's house, on 19 April 1603 and knighted 11 men there. The Fieldens bought the estate in 1872. The River Wharfe and the hamlet of Kirkby Wharfe are both close by.
How the van gets to Grimston
The drive into the park leaves the A162 London Road, the road running south out of Tadcaster. The suggested route from Bradford uses the M606, M62 and M1, then the B1217 by Aberford Road and Collier Lane to reach the A162. Allow roughly 50 to 60 minutes from Bradford, an estimate that depends on the motorways.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 60 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Grimston
Grimston Park was one country house. How can it hold several homes?
It was converted after the 1980 sale into 11 separate residences, and some of the outbuildings, such as the coach house, became dwellings too. Each part has its own address, so give the name of your part of the estate when you book.
I found a Grimston near York as well. Is that the same place?
No. That Grimston is a hamlet in Dunnington parish, 3 miles east of York. This one is its own parish beside Tadcaster, in the Appleton Roebuck & Church Fenton ward, with postcodes such as LS24 9DB.
Can the van drive up to the house at Grimston Park?
An asphalt estate drive joins the A162 London Road, so a van can get into the park. How close it gets to your door depends on which part of the estate you live in, so tell us before the day.
