Man and van in Selby, from Bradford
Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 39 miles from Selby (50-65 minutes by road). Jobs in Selby are quoted as one fixed figure, agreed before we set off, with the drive already in it.
Moving in Selby: what to know first
The A19 runs straight through the middle of town as Gowthorpe, Market Place and The Crescent, with the Abbey standing over Market Place. Micklegate is one way, and Finkle Street is a narrow one-way living street, so a flat above a shop there is loaded from the nearest open road rather than from its own door. The market trades on Market Place every Monday, which makes any other weekday the easier choice for a move in the centre.
Across the Ouse, Barlby Road takes the A19 over the old toll bridge, free to cross since 1991, to Barlby Bridge, where Thomas Street, Elm Street and George Street make up a grid of Edwardian terraces beside the river. Doors open close to the road, so the van stands in the street. North-west of the centre, terraced rows such as Kitchener Street and Powell Street sit off Millgate, and Far Grange Meadows is going up off Cockret Road.
To the south and south-east the town turns into family housing. The Abbots Road estate near Selby College is long rows of semis, and Staynor Hall, still growing off Staynor Link, adds two to four bedroom new-builds whose newest streets were still being laid in 2026. Brayton, a mile south down the A19, and Thorpe Willoughby, off the A1238 by Brayton Barff, are semis, bungalows and detached houses where the van can usually pull onto a drive or stop by the kerb.
Parking and access in Selby
North Yorkshire Council runs the town car parks, among them Back Micklegate with 198 spaces, Micklegate with 52 and Audus Street with 51, charged 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and free on Sundays, plus Portholme Road near the station. The 2026 station gateway works closed the business centre car park for good and the Lower APCOA Social Club car park until at least the winter. The van is about 2.5m tall, so it never uses a 2.1m barrier.
- Gowthorpe, Market Place and The Crescent carry the A19 through the centre, while Micklegate is one way and Finkle Street is a narrow one-way living street.
- The market trades on Market Place every Monday, so a flat above a shop there is easier to move on another weekday.
- The old toll bridge, free since 1991, carries the A19 over the Ouse to Barlby Bridge, and the A63 bypass crosses the river on its own swing bridge.
- Part of Ousegate by the station has a 3.6m height limit, which the Transit clears, but it cannot pass a 2.1m car park barrier.
- On Staynor Hall the newest streets, Webbies Way, Seletun Court and Deer Park View, were still being built in 2026, so give the nearest finished street too.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Selby
How much does a man and van cost in Selby?
Each Selby job has one fixed price, set before the van leaves Bradford, and the 39-mile drive is already in it. The figure follows the load, the carry at each end, such as a walk from Back Micklegate to a Finkle Street flat or the stairs in a Staynor Hall townhouse, and how far the load travels. Send photos and both postcodes; the prices page explains how a quote is worked out.
Is a Monday move in the town centre a problem?
It can be. The market trades on Market Place every Monday, so a flat above a shop round the Abbey is easier to move on another weekday, when the van can get closer. If Monday is the only day, say so and the load is planned from Micklegate or a council car park.
Does the old toll bridge still hold the van up on the way to Barlby?
No toll is paid: the council bought the bridge and scrapped the charge in 1991, and since 2004 it has carried the A19 alone, with the bypass crossing the Ouse on a separate swing bridge. A move between the town and Barlby Bridge is a short drive over it.
Can you take my old sofa to the Canal Road tip?
No, old furniture is not carried off for disposal. North Yorkshire Council runs a charged bulky waste collection for sofas, beds and appliances, and residents can take items to the household waste recycling centre on Canal Road themselves.
