Loading a Selby flat when the street will not take the van
Flats in the old centre sit above the shops on Gowthorpe, Micklegate and Finkle Street, reached by a side door and a steep inside stair. Gowthorpe carries the A19, Micklegate is one way and Finkle Street is a narrow one-way living street, so the van rarely stops at the door itself. It waits on the nearest road that allows it or in a council car park such as Back Micklegate or Audus Street, and boxes go down the stairs and along the pavement on a trolley.
Newer flats are simpler. Court House, the former magistrates court on New Lane, holds sixteen apartments, and Portholme House is a newer block off Portholme Road beside the Tesco. A lift, where there is one, changes the timing completely, so check it is working before the day. In 2026 the station gateway works closed two car parks near the station, the business centre one for good, so a van may have to stop a little further off there than it once could.
Before a Selby flat move
- Tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and how the stair turns, because a sofa may need its feet off to get round
- If the flat is round Market Place, pick a day other than Monday, when the market trades there
- Ask your managing agent whether the van may stand in a private bay or courtyard behind the block
- Book the lift at Court House or a similar block for the morning of the move where the building needs it
- Have boxes sealed and stacked inside the door so the carry down starts the moment the van arrives

Flat Removals in Selby: your questions
Can the van stop outside a flat on Finkle Street?
Only for a moment, if at all. Finkle Street is a narrow one-way living street, so the van loads from the nearest road it can stand on or from a council car park, and everything is wheeled the last stretch.
Is a one-bedroom flat a full van?
Rarely. A one-bedroom flat with a bed, a sofa, a wardrobe and twenty or so boxes fits in the long wheelbase Transit with room to spare, so it is one trip.
Can you move a flat on a Monday?
Yes, but a flat round Market Place is slower then, because the market trades in the square. Any other weekday gets the van closer.
Can you move a Selby flat to Leeds or York?
Yes. York is about 14 miles up the A19 and Leeds about 24 by the A63 and M1, so a one or two-bedroom flat goes in one trip and is carried up at the far end.
