Loading hours, bollards and lifts: moving a York flat
Inside the walls, the clock decides. The footstreets, including Coney Street, Davygate, Parliament Street and Low Petergate, are closed to vehicles from 10.30am to 5pm every day, Stonegate takes loading only in the morning, up to 10.30am, and Shambles only before 10.30am or after 5pm. The van can reach York from about 9am, so the morning window before the Blake Street and Goodramgate barriers close is short: enough for a studio, while a bigger flat may suit the evening, except on Stonegate.
Outside the walls, the problem is the building. The Groves has blocks of 1960s flats and maisonettes between Garden Street, Penley's Grove Street and Lowther Street, with shared stairs and the area's closure points on the approach. The Chocolate Works, on the old Terry's site, has apartments off Clock Tower Way, where the managing agent can say where a van may stand. Neither the Esplanade car park, signed at 6ft 11in, nor Piccadilly at 6ft 6in, takes a van about 2.5m tall, so loading is from the street or the block's own parking.
Getting a York flat ready to move
- Say how much is in the flat, since a big load inside the walls is better booked for the evening than squeezed into the morning after a 9am arrival
- Check with your managing agent whether the lift can be held or protected, and whether there is a loading bay in the block
- Tell us the floor, the number of steps and whether the stairs are shared, as in the Groves maisonettes
- If the new flat is in a ResPark zone, buy a visitor permit for the day so the van can stand outside
- Beds and flat-pack wardrobes are taken apart before they go down a narrow communal stair

The floors at each end, whether there is a lift, the walk from the nearest legal stop and the time window inside the walls set the price, which is agreed before the van leaves Bradford. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Flat Removals in York: your questions
Can you move a flat above a shop on a York footstreet?
Yes, outside footstreet hours. The van reaches York from about 9am, so a small flat can go in the morning window and a larger one in the evening, except on Stonegate, which has no evening access. The start time is agreed when you book.
Can the van use a city-centre car park while loading?
Not the ones with height barriers. The Esplanade car park is signed at 6ft 11in and Piccadilly at 6ft 6in, and the Transit is about 2.5m tall, so it loads from the street or the building's own parking instead.
Is a studio or one-bed flat one load?
Usually. A studio or one-bedroom flat fits in the 3.4m load space with room to spare. A two-bed flat with a full sofa suite may need a second trip, and photos show which.
