Narrow back kitchens and upstairs flats: appliances into York homes
A York terrace usually has its kitchen at the back, through the front room or along a passage, and in South Bank, Holgate and The Groves the back yards open onto alleys too narrow for a van. So a washing machine comes in through the front door and through the house. Send a photo of the route from the door to the kitchen, including any step down, and the time is planned into the price.
A fridge or fridge-freezer shorter than the van's 1.7m roof travels upright and strapped. Tall or American fridge-freezers are not moved. A washing machine needs its transit bolts fitted before it travels, and the driver does not plumb it in, so book a plumber or connect it yourself. Flats over shops inside the walls take a delivery only before 10.30am or after 5pm, outside footstreet hours.
Before a York appliance delivery
- Measure the gap under the worktop, then every doorway on the way from the front step to the kitchen
- Fit the transit bolts to a washing machine you are selling or moving, and drain it the night before
- A freezer bought second-hand should be defrosted by the seller a day ahead, doors propped open to dry
- Tell us about steps at the door and any stairs, such as a first-floor flat in The Groves
- An old appliance is not removed; City of York Council's bulky waste service collects large items

Appliance Delivery in York: your questions
Can you collect a washing machine from Currys at Clifton Moor?
Yes. Send the order details and your address, and it is collected, strapped upright and carried into your kitchen. Hooking it up afterwards is a job for your plumber, or for you.
Do you move American fridge-freezers?
No. American and other tall fridge-freezers are not moved at all. A standard fridge or freezer that fits under the 1.7m roof rides upright, strapped to the side of the van.
Can you take the old washing machine?
No. The van only brings the new machine in. For the old one, ring the council's bulky waste line on 01904 551551, or ask the retailer selling the replacement what it offers.
