Tall houses or a tight window: why York homes get packed first
Bootham's Georgian houses, and the larger Victorian ones in Clifton and off Holgate Road, were built tall: kitchen low down, living rooms above, bedrooms at the top. Packing them is slow because everything has to come down the same staircase, and fragile things such as glass, framed pictures and china need wrapping before they go. Packing the day before the move keeps the loading day for loading.
Inside the walls, the reason is time. A flat over a shop on Goodramgate or Low Petergate can be loaded only before 10.30am or after 5pm, and Stonegate only in the morning, up to 10.30am, so a flat that is already boxed and stacked by the door makes that window work. With the van reaching York from about 9am, the morning window is short, and a larger flat may suit the evening. Terraces in South Bank and The Groves are smaller but crammed, and packing them room by room keeps the narrow halls clear for the carry.
How packing works for a York move
- Book packing for the day before the move for a townhouse, or the same morning for a small flat
- Boxes, tape and paper are brought along as part of the packing service
- Pick out anything you want to pack yourself, such as documents and jewellery, and keep it with you
- Label which floor each room is on at the new address, so boxes go straight to the right one
- Beds and flat-pack wardrobes are dismantled at the end of packing and rebuilt at the new house

Packing Service in York: your questions
How long does it take to pack a York townhouse?
It depends on the floors and how full they are. A three-storey townhouse with books and china can take a full day, so packing is booked for the day before the move.
Do you bring the boxes and packing paper?
Yes. Boxes, tape and paper come with the packing service, so there is no need to collect boxes from shops.
Can you pack just the kitchen and fragile things?
Yes. Packing can be one room or the whole house, and the price follows what you choose.
