Townhouse, terrace or semi: planning a York house move by street
A terrace in South Bank or Clementhorpe, on streets such as Count De Burgh Terrace, Balmoral Terrace or Philadelphia Terrace, has a front door almost on the pavement and cars parked nose to tail outside. The van stops at a visitor permit bay or the nearest legal space and the rooms go out by hand and trolley, so the carry is short but the stair is tight. Many of those streets are in a residents' parking zone, so a daily visitor permit for the moving day is worth buying in advance.
The Groves is different again. Since the council made its low traffic scheme permanent in 2022, bollards close Lowther Street and several junctions to through traffic, so the van is routed to the end of your street that is still open. A Bootham townhouse has the opposite problem: the A19 runs past the door, the stairs climb several floors, and the furniture comes down in a planned order. Out in Acomb, Woodthorpe or Haxby, a semi with a drive is the simplest load in York.
Before the van reaches your York house
- If your street is in a ResPark zone, buy a daily visitor permit from City of York Council for the moving day, because a vehicle without one may wait only about ten minutes
- In The Groves, give the full address so the van is sent to the open end of the street rather than a bollarded junction
- Near the Knavesmire, check the York Racecourse fixtures between May and October, since race days and the August Ebor Festival bring crowds
- Measure the turn at the top of a Bootham or Clifton staircase for wardrobes and bed frames, and send a photo
- An upright piano can come too, with notice and photos of the steps at both houses

What sets the price of a York house move
The rooms of furniture, the carry from where the van can stand, the staircases at both houses and whether a second load is needed set the time, and the price is fixed before the day with the run from Bradford included. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
House Removals in York: your questions
How much do removals in York cost?
The price is fixed for each move, agreed before the van leaves Bradford. It follows the amount of furniture, the floors at each end, how far things are carried from the van and the distance between the two houses. Photos of each room and both postcodes are enough for a quote.
Will a three-bedroom York house fit in one load?
Sometimes. A lightly furnished South Bank terrace may go in one, while a full Acomb semi with a garage usually needs two. The load space is 3.4m long and 1.7m high, and room photos settle it before you book.
How far in advance should I book a house move in York?
As soon as you have a completion or key date. Completions bunch up on Fridays and at month ends, so a few weeks' notice helps; a weekday in the middle of the month can often be fitted in sooner.
Do you take beds and wardrobes apart?
Yes. Beds and flat-pack wardrobes you already own are dismantled at the old house and rebuilt at the new one as part of the price, which matters on the narrow stairs of a York terrace.
