Two roads meet in the centre: the A646, which runs east down the valley to Halifax and west as Burnley Road through Lydgate and Cornholme towards Lancashire, and the A6033 Rochdale Road south through Gauxholme and Walsden. Above them, the lanes to Cross Stone, Mankinholes and Lumbutts are steep and narrow, and a long wheelbase Transit may have to stop short. Brook Street, by the market hall and the open market, is busiest on market days, so a central job there goes better early.

On-street parking on the terraces is tight and often full. The market hall and open market sit together on Brook Street next to a public car park and the bus station. The open market trades Wednesday to Sunday and the market hall Monday to Saturday, so the centre is busiest on those days and an early start helps.
