Mankinholes: what to know before moving day
Almost every building here is old and listed. Mankinholes Hall, from the late 16th century, is now the youth hostel; Old Farmhouse and Pilkington Farmhouse are late 16th century too, and one house is simply called Mankinholes and dated 1690. Several have been split into two homes, such as Mankinholes Farmhouse and Antwerp Cottage. The hamlet was an early centre of Wesleyan Methodism, with a chapel from 1814. The congregation joined Lumbutts in 1979, and the Sunday school building of 1833 is now a private house set in a large graveyard. A long stone water trough with four basins still stands on the old packhorse way, and the hamlet sits inside the Lumbutts and Mankinholes conservation area.

Mankinholes is the usual starting point for the walk up Stoodley Pike, so it is sensible to plan for walkers' cars on a fine weekend. A weekday, or an early start, gives the van the best chance of stopping close to your door.
