Two cities, one valley road
Being on the Calder Valley line, with trains running to Manchester Victoria one way and Leeds the other, means a student list from this town looks nothing like one from Wakefield. Manchester comes up as often as Leeds, Huddersfield is a regular, and Burnley College is a short run over the tops the other way. The move follows the same split, so the first question is always which side of the Pennines you are heading for.
Getting the room out is the local part. A lot of the terraces here are over-and-under top-and-bottom houses: one dwelling sitting on another and entered from a different street, with a flight of stone steps and no chance of backing a van to the door. Weavers' cottages add narrow winding stairs and long mullioned windows that do not open. We work out the order of the carry before anything leaves the room.
What Todmorden student removals usually involves
- The A646 valley floor is the only practical way in and it does close in heavy rain, so we build slack into dates fixed weeks ahead
- Market days fill the market ground and the streets round it, and the pay-and-display car parks off Halifax Road and by the bus station on Stansfield Road are small
- Lanes up to Lydgate, Cornholme, Mankinholes and Lumbutts are single-track with hairpins a 3.4m load cannot swing in one go, so those rooms get shuttled down
- Low rail and canal bridges around Gauxholme and Walsden restrict the southern approach, which decides how we come at an address on that side
- It is 21 slow A-road miles back to Bradford with no motorway, so we allow closer to an hour each way and still add no travel surcharge
Where in Todmorden we work
- Walsdenthe southern end of town, where the canal and rail bridges decide the approach
- Cornholme and Lydgatesteep single-track climbs, so the van waits low and we carry down to it
- Shade and Gauxholmeover-and-under terraces with the front door on a different level from the street
- Water Street and Brook Streetcentral terraces by the market, loaded before the stalls go up
- Eastwood and Cross Stonehillside cottages above the valley, a steps-and-barrow job rather than a doorstep load
- Halifax Road and Burnley Roadthe two valley roads out, one towards Yorkshire, one towards Lancashire
If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Todmorden and the surrounding OL14 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.
Common Todmorden runs
- Todmorden → Manchestersouth out of the valley and down, booked ahead so we can start at first light
- Todmorden → Leedsdown the valley through Hebden Bridge and Sowerby Bridge, then east, one load and back
- Todmorden → Bradford21 miles of single-carriageway valley road, closer to an hour than half
What it costs
A Todmorden student move is priced on the load and the hours it takes, with the slow valley road accounted for up front rather than added afterwards. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Todmorden from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: student removals in Todmorden
Is there a university in Todmorden?
No, and there is no college campus either. Students here travel out - Manchester and Leeds on the Calder Valley line, Huddersfield, or Burnley College over the tops. That makes late September and the end of June the two busy weeks, going out full one way and coming back full the other.
Our house is a top-and-bottom with the door up a flight of steps. Is that a problem?
No, it is the normal Todmorden job. It changes the order rather than the price of the day: boxes and bags down first, mattress on its side, bed frame apart if the turn is tight. Send a photo of the steps and the doorway and we will say what comes out whole and what does not.
Can you do the run to Manchester and back in a day?
Yes, for a room's worth. We load in the morning, get out of the valley, unload at the other end and come back. The valley road is the slow part rather than the motorway, so an early start matters more here than it would from a town sitting on the M62.
