Lumbutts: what to know before moving day
The landmark is the water tower of Lumbutts Old Mill, about 30 metres high, which once held three water wheels one above another; the mill itself closed in 1926 and was later demolished, and the Grade II tower was restored in 2017 with crowdfunded money. Around it are the mill dams that fed it, including Mill Dam, Lee Dam and Heeley Dam. Lumbutts and Mankinholes were made a conservation area together in 1980.
The houses are mostly old stone. Lee Farmhouse dates from 1584, Brink Top Farmhouse from the early 18th century, and the listing for 7 and 9 Lumbutts Road describes three-storey cottages with doors in the middle floor on their sides, which is worth knowing before a wardrobe goes in. The Top Brink Inn is the village pub, and Lumbutts Methodist Church dates from the early 19th century.
How the van gets to Lumbutts
Lumbutts Road is the road in, used by the T6 bus to and from Todmorden; the Pennine Bridleway and the Calderdale Way follow it through the village, so expect walkers and riders. The road up was improved in the 1820s for the mill traffic. Coming from Bradford by way of the A646 and Todmorden takes roughly 50 to 60 minutes.
