Walsden: what to know before moving day
Walsden is really a chain of hamlets under one name, including Warland, Bottomley, Lanebottom, Deanroyd, Ramsden, Henshaw, Hollins and Copprashouse, so give the street as well as the village when you book. Around the centre, Hollins Mill, a cotton spinning and weaving mill of 1856 to 1858, stands beside Rochdale Road, and the listed stone rows on Square Road and Top o' th' Hill Road date from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Inchfield Fold Farmhouse carries the date 1631.
Rochdale Road, the Rochdale Canal and Walsden Water run side by side down the valley floor, and several side streets cross the canal on old stone bridges: Hollins Road on Bridge No. 34 and St Peter's Gate on Bridge No. 35 are both listed. St Peter's Church lost its body to fire in 1948 and was rebuilt in 1956; its 1864 spire survives, though the building has been closed on safety grounds since 2025. The physicist Sir John Cockcroft grew up on Birks Lane.

Today it is wholly in West Yorkshire, in Calderdale and the Todmorden parish. Historically part of it was run from Rochdale, in Lancashire, with Walsden Water as the county boundary, which is why some of its old records sit in Rochdale's archives.
Does Walsden have a station?
Yes. Walsden station, on the line between Leeds, Todmorden and Manchester, reopened in 1990 after nearly 30 years closed. It is the last station before Greater Manchester, which helps if you are travelling separately from the van.
