Trawden: what to know before moving day
Farming was the main work here, although the village also had several mills, most since pulled down for housing or converted into homes. Older listed buildings include the Sun Inn, a row of three three-storey weavers' cottages called Stanstead Cottages, the back-to-back Yeoman Hey and Dent Cottage, and Dent Howe Farmhouse. The 1747 bell turret from Trawden Hall is listed too. For a three-storey cottage, check the stair width and the turn at each landing before booking bulky furniture.
The B6250 is the main road, called Church Street through the village and Skipton Road towards Colne, with Keighley Road, Burnley Road, Colne Road, Lanehouse and Foulds Road branching off. St Mary the Virgin Church, Trawden Forest Primary School, Harambee Surgery, the Trawden Arms and the community centre are all along or near it. Trawden Brook runs through, and Beardshaw Beck keeps the village's old name. Wycoller, the hamlet with the ruined 16th-century hall, is in the same parish.
How the van gets to Trawden
The B6250 links Trawden with Colne through Cottontree, below Winewall. From Bradford the van reaches Colne on the A6068 from Keighley or the A56 from Skipton, then turns south-east on the B6250. From 1903 until 1934 a tramway from Colne served the village, ending at Zion Chapel on Lane House Lane.
