Barrowford: what to know before moving day
The A682 Gisburn Road is the long main street, with terraces of stone weavers' cottages along it, several of them listed with mullioned windows. For a narrow cottage staircase, measure it and the front door before booking a big wardrobe or a corner sofa. Colne Road (B6247), Barnoldswick Road, Pasture Lane, Pendle Street and Mill Street are the other main streets, and many side roads are 20 mph.
The toll house of 1805 to 1807 still stands at the junction with the road to Colne, restored in the 1980s and owned by the trust behind the Pendle Heritage Centre. The heritage centre is in Park Hill, a farmhouse with a 1661 datestone. Barrowford Park's ornamental pond was once a cotton mill reservoir, and the river wall opposite was built to employ weavers in the Cotton Famine, with a milestone dated 1866. Booths opened a supermarket in 2014 on the site of the East Lancashire Towel Company mill. At Higherford, the packhorse bridge of 1583 to 1591 and Higherford Mill, now artists' workshops, are both listed.
How the van gets to Barrowford
Junction 13 of the M65, the Reedyford Interchange, is on the Nelson side of the village, and from there the A682 runs north through Barrowford as Gisburn Road. The B6247 Colne Road links the village with Colne. From Bradford the van gets to Colne by the A6068 from Keighley or the A56 from Skipton, then takes the M65 one junction west to Reedyford.
