Barnoldswick: what to know before moving day

Barlick grew from a village into a cotton town once the canal and later the railway arrived, and it had thirteen mills, the last built in 1920. Bancroft Mill's steam engine is kept as a working museum, and the town still makes things: Silentnight beds, Esse stoves at the Ouzledale works, Hope Technology bike parts, and Rolls-Royce, whose engine codes beginning RB stand for Rolls Barnoldswick. The Rolls-Royce site itself began as Bankfield Shed, a cotton weaving mill.

The centre runs along Church Street, Manchester Road and Albert Road, with the Civic Hall, library, Holy Trinity Church, Co-op and Aldi, and OpenStreetMap names streets such as Cobden Street, Wellington Street, Mosley Street, Pen-y-ghent Way and Ingleborough Drive around them. Coates, with Coates Lane Primary School, and Long Ing lie on the east side towards the canal, and Greenberfield Locks, with their listed stone bridges, are just north-east of the town.

How the van gets to Barnoldswick

All the roads into town are B roads. From Bradford the van goes up the A629 to Skipton, west on the A59 and south on the A56, then turns off at Thornton-in-Craven on the B6252, which comes in over Coates Bridge. The B6383 from Kelbrook through Salterforth is the other way in, and the B6251 links the town with Foulridge and Bracewell.

There is no station in town: the branch line closed in 1965, so the nearest trains are at Skipton or Colne. A move here is a road job, on the B6252 from Skipton or the B6383 from the A56 at Kelbrook.
