Meltham: what to know before moving day

The town centre is where the B6107 and B6108 meet at Market Place, with St Bartholomew's church, the Swan Inn, the Co-op, the pharmacy, the surgery and the library all within a couple of hundred yards. The streets closest to it, such as Station Street, Greens End Road, Clarke Lane, Carlile Street, Green Street and New Street, are the ones nearest the centre; the rest of the town's 3,695 households are on the streets beyond, out to Helme and Thick Hollins.

Meltham Mills was the site of the Brook family's silk mill complex, which employed more than 1,000 people in the late 19th century. The Brooks built housing for their workers there, as well as Meltham Hall, the town hall and St James' Church, and the goat's head from their arms is still on the old mill office. From 1939 to 1988 the site was the David Brown tractor works, and its buildings are now industrial units. If you are moving to or from Meltham Mills, give the street name as well, since the place name covers both houses and the industrial units.

The old railway is gone: the branch from Lockwood closed to passengers in 1949, and the station site is now housing and the Morrisons supermarket. Part of the trackbed is the Meltham Greenway, a path rather than a road.

How the van gets to Meltham

The B6108 Huddersfield Road is the direct road from Huddersfield into the town centre. The B6107 crosses it at Market Place, carrying on as Slaithwaite Road towards the Colne Valley and as Holmfirth Road towards Wilshaw, Netherthong and the A6024. Wessenden Head Road heads out towards the moor. From Bradford the van comes through Huddersfield and out along the B6108.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
